Be Punctual When Paying Your Bills

It is extremely important that you pay your bills on time. Although this method in improving your credit score may seem completely obvious, late payments are the most common piece of negative information that appear on credit reports. In addition the late payments are often the reason for significant drops in credit scores. It is absolutely necessary that you always make at least the minimum payments in a timely manner each and every month when it comes to dealing with loans and credit cards.

The effect on your credit report and credit score will be drastic if you are late or if you decide to skip one or multiple mortgage payments. However, making late payments on other types of loans or failing to make payments on any loan will also have a devastating effect on your credit score. This effect will have an impact for up to seven years.

On the plus side, the benefit to having credit cards is that you can decide how much you spend. You get to determine how much you wish to pay back each month as long as that amount is equal to or greater than the minimum monthly payment due. This allows you to budget and plan financially around your money, forcing you to make more intelligent decisions based on your financial circumstances. Simply paying the minimums on your credit cards will keep those accounts from being late. However, the costs associated with that decision— in terms of fees and interest, will often be significant over time. In addition, this strategy will prevent you from greatly decreasing or paying off the debt.

Aside from making your mortgage payments on time, one of the worst mistakes you can make is having an account fall into collections. Falling into collections means: if you have neglected to pay your monthly minimums or have evaded making payments for several months, your account will be turned over to a collection agency. When this happens your credit score will be negatively impacted for up to seven years, in spite of whether or not you ultimately make the payments or settle the account.

Preventing your accounts from going into a collections status is actually quite an easy process. If you cannot afford to make the full payment due, you should simply contact the creditor and try to negotiate an alternative payment schedule. People who get themselves into financial trouble often feel inclined to ignore the problems until they become serious legal problems. By merely taking a responsible approach to the situation, paying what you can and working with your creditors can almost always keep your delinquent accounts out of collections. This will protect your credit and save you a lot of money.

It is true that everyone’s creditors would like to be paid in a timely manner. However, most creditors are also understanding with the financial problems that people can encounter. By communicating with your creditors and demonstrating good faith by making at least minimum monthly payments, the creditors will be accepting and seek to help keep you from destroying your credit.

The simplest and most effective thing you can do to protect your credit report and credit score is simply to pay your bills on time. Paying your bills in a timely manner is a good way to begin repairing credit.
